[Comedy] Ronny Chieng – You don’t know what you’re talking about

By Frankey

Performed live on 27 March 2015 at The Forum Melbourne as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF).

Melbourne is host to a plethora of festivals every year. From things like Fashion to Food and Wine, there’s something for everyone. But let’s face it, MICF takes the cake every time.

Born in Malaysia, Ronny was raised in all of England, Singapore and the U.S. before moving to Melbourne for university and the good life. Back in 2012, Ronny was the successful underdog, winning all manner of “best newcomer” awards. He was the next big thing: funny, edgy, raw, different. Now in 2015, Ronny’s back with his latest set, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about’ and expectations are high.

From the moment Ronny steps out onto the stage his confidence is beaming and the laughs are flowing. His jokes are creative and witty, with just the right mix of pause and delivery. That said, there are admittedly ebbs and flows to his performance. But such is the nature of a comedy performance – some things are just funnier than others. I mean, it’s difficult to be funny all the time (unless perhaps, you are Louis CK).

In this year’s set, while you can’t help but get a sense that he’s still experimenting with different flavours of jokes, it’s nevertheless A-grade stuff. For the most part, Ronny’s set is relatable to the 21-30 year old demographic: it’s filled with Twitter and Facebook references, living out of home, girlfriend issues, and always ever doubting whether he’s left the iron on.

At 29 years old, Ronny Chieng still blows most of his competition out of the water. Don’t miss it.

Tickets to Ronny Chieng can be purchased from the MICF website. Shows are on until 19 April 2015.
